Grant Provides Technology for Compassionate Communication

Patients at Ascension Genesys Hospital don’t have to worry about receiving medical care in isolation or separated from their loved ones because of COVID-19 safety measures. Through the generosity of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint Compassionate Living Fund, a $5,000 grant was awarded to the Ascension Genesys Foundation to support the purchase of sixteen Samsung Galaxy Tablets, protective covers and tray table stands to facilitate video calls connecting COVID-19 and other seriously ill patients with their families to receive emotional and spiritual support.

Tablets will be distributed across hospital units so that patients who are unable to have visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions can have important face-to-face conversations with their families. In this unprecedented situation, there are many patients who are in the last stages of life, away from loved ones where nurses bear both the privilege and the weight of being the only support present for end-of-life. Without the usual physical presence of family to say goodbye, this tablet technology bridges the gap to ease the burden of this traumatic situation for everyone - patients, families and nurses to receive critically needed compassionate care, communication and strength.
