emPOWER Genesee Helps County Residents Meet Needs
emPOWER Genesee, a program of Genesee Health Plan (GHP) in partnership with Ascension Genesys, Consumers Energy, and Huntington Bank, helps connect Genesee County residents and families with utility assistance and resources, health care resources and enrollment, financial assistance and additional community resources. Located in the Consumers Energy Direct Payment Center in Flint, Michigan, community members can access needed resources in the same location as they pay their utility bills.
Initially, a GHP Community Navigator was available at the Consumers Energy location to help connect people in real-time with needed resources. Since the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, services are accessed virtually by Genesee County Consumers Energy customers who receive emPOWER Genesee information at the Direct Payment Center drive-through window or in their monthly Consumers billing statements. By delivering community navigation services on-site, service access barriers are reduced, and an environment that mitigates the Social Determinants of Health - conditions like access to healthcare, healthy foods, public safety, social support, transportation and safe housing - is created.
“A healthy life and well-being starts with making sure people have access to to essential needs like water, food, quality healthcare coverage, utilities, and financial tools, which is why we’re partnering with organizations in the community to implement emPOWER Genesee,” said Jim Milanowski, President and CEO of Genesee Health Plan, “emPOWER Genesee’s innovative approach is an excellent example of how public and private organizations are working together to meet people where they are to access needed services”.
emPOWER Genesee launched in November of 2019, and has made contact with over 2,000 Genesee County residents to meet their utility, financial and health care needs.
