Community Steps Forward to Help Healthcare Heroes
When the COVID-19 crisis emerged and emergency measures were put in place, shuttering schools, workplaces and many other services, the impact on everyone, including Ascension associates, was devastating. Many families faced an interruption of work, had to seek childcare options, and saw many other challenges emerge. Most of all, many of our associates continued to work in a high-risk environment to provide the compassionate care our patients needed.
Fortunately, the Ascension and greater Genesee County community stepped up to support our healthcare heroes in unbelievable ways. The Ascension Genesys Foundation Friendship Fund, established to provide support to associates facing financial hardship during this crisis, was bolstered by an outpouring of support from dozens of community members, including a $10,000 lead gift generously given by the Ascension Genesys Medical Staff and nearly $4000 in grocery gift cards from the Islamic Medical Association of Flint.
To date, the fund has provided assistance to more than 200 associates to assist with housing costs, food, prescriptions and other necessities.
More than 80 community businesses and individuals showed their generosity as well, even in the trying economic conditions, by providing hundreds of meals, snacks, beverages and other equipment and supplies to essential Ascension healthcare workers on all shifts.
